Study

Canada has a world class education system that prides itself in having international participants. You've made a great choice to study in Canada. For over 100,000 students, studying in Canada is a step towards Canadian immigration - often students realize that they would like to take these steps after studying; However, planning ahead will allow you to realize your dreams and it isn't difficult with the right advice and research.

Make sure that you are prepared to look for a qualified high school, qualified canadian school, or Canadian university that has accepted you. The right school and study permit is a key to your plans to immigrate. Law & Associates has helped students and parents put together and review plans to achieve their longer term plans for immigration.

Make sure you obtain a Study Permit.

Make sure you have savings for both tuition and living expenses (dorm, rent, books, food, stationary, calculators, drawing tools, contingency for travel and school trips, etc.)

Work/Study

For some, the opportunity to gain work experience during study is available. Citizenship and Immigration Canada allow international students to work in specific situations. Typically, students are required to arrive with sufficient money for living and school expenses. However, in certain cases, an international student can work during study. They may work on campus (without a permit), off-campus with a permit, off campus as part of Work Co-Operative programs where the work experience is a part of their program curriculum (needs work permit).

Work Study permits and off-campus work permits may be available with schools that participate in the program.

Spouses and common-law partners of international students may also be eligible to work during their partners study stay.

After study, you may also be eligible for work permits that vary in length (6 months up to 3 years). With this valuable work experience, you may qualify for immigration as a skilled worker/professional. There are some PNP Provincial Nominee Programs that encourage international students to stay in Canada after their degrees or study completes.

For example - BC has a provincial nominee program administered by BC Ministry of Regional Economic and Skills Development in collaboration with Citizenship and Immigration Canada.
